Discover how creative color placement, textured marker strokes, and multiliner pen details can completely transform stamped images into beautifully personalized works of art. In this post, I’m sharing how I created braided and textured hairstyles on my patriotic “Monae” project using Copic Markers, along with thoughts on artistic customization, representation in crafting, and how Angel Policies typically support creative interpretation through coloring and hand-detailed enhancements.

Celebrating Diversity Through Coloring, Texture & Artistic Expression
One of my favorite things about cardmaking and stamped images is how a single character can become completely unique through creative coloring choices. By changing hair texture, color placement, shading, and added pen details, you can personalize stamped images to better reflect different cultures, styles, personalities, and artistic visions.

Recently, I shared this patriotic project featuring “Monae” with textured braids created using a combination of Copic Markers and a multiliner pen. That project sparked a wonderful question regarding customization and Angel Policies — specifically whether artists are allowed to alter stamped images through coloring techniques, added details, or texture enhancements.
The short answer? In most cases: Absolutely yes.
Stamps Are Meant to Inspire Creativity
When you purchase a stamp, you are purchasing a tool for artistic expression. Coloring, shading, customizing hairstyles, changing textures, adding freckles, altering eye color, deepening skin tones, creating curls, adding braids, or modifying color placement are all forms of artistic interpretation.
This is no different than:
Choosing seasonal color palettes
Paper piecing clothing
Adding glitter or embossing
Extending backgrounds
Creating scene cards
Altering hair color or eye color
Adding accessories or texture
As stampers and colorists, we bring these characters to life through our own creativity.
Using Color Placement to Create Hair Texture
Hair texture can dramatically change the personality and cultural representation of a stamped image. Small changes in marker strokes and pen detailing can create:
Soft waves
Loose curls
Tight coils
Natural texture
Braids
Twists
Locs
Straight styles
Puff ponytails
Protective styles
The stamped outline simply becomes the foundation.
Techniques for Creating Braids & Natural Texture
For my patriotic “Monae” project, I used layered Copic coloring and fine multiliner detailing to create the appearance of textured braids and coiled hair.
The Process Included:
1. Base Coloring
I started with warm brown Copic tones to establish the hair foundation.
2. Directional Coloring
Instead of coloring with smooth flat strokes, I followed the natural movement of the stamped hair using curved flicking motions.
3. Layering Shadows
Darker shades were concentrated:
Near the scalp
Under overlapping curls
Behind accessories
In deeper sections of the ponytails
4. Multiliner Pen Detailing
This is where the transformation really happens.
Using a very fine multiliner pen (0.03 or 0.05), I added:
Small curved “C” strokes
Looping braid shapes
Tiny directional texture lines
Additional strand definition
These details create the illusion of:
Braided sections
Coily texture
Dimensional curls
Natural hair movement
Creative Representation Matters
One of the beautiful things about stamping is the ability to create artwork that reflects a wide variety of people, cultures, and identities.
Coloring techniques allow artists to:
Increase representation
Create inclusive projects
Personalize characters
Reflect family and friends
Explore different artistic styles
A single stamped image can become countless unique interpretations simply through:
Skin tone combinations
Hair color
Texture techniques
Fashion color placement
Accessories
Cultural styling inspiration
That creative flexibility is part of what makes paper crafting so meaningful.
Understanding Angel Policies
Angel Policies are designed to protect the intellectual property of the original artwork while still allowing crafters to enjoy creating with their stamps.
While every company has its own policy, most Angel Policies generally allow:
Personal crafting
Handmade card sales in limited quantities
Coloring and customization
Artistic interpretation
Different color palettes
Added shading and details
What is typically not allowed is:
Digitally reproducing the original line art
Scanning and redistributing images
Mass production without permission
Creating counterfeit copies
Adding creative coloring, texture, braids, curls, or stylistic details through hand-coloring does not usually violate an Angel Policy because you are enhancing the artwork — not reproducing or replacing the original illustration.
That said, always review the individual company’s Angel Policy if you plan to:
Teach classes
Sell products
Create digital downloads
Manufacture items
Reproduce imagery commercially
Art Is Personal
One of the most rewarding parts of coloring stamped images is making them your own. Whether you prefer:
Soft vintage palettes
Bold rainbow colors
Fantasy hair
Realistic skin tones
Cultural hairstyles
Glitter and sparkle
Graphic comic-inspired shading
…your creativity is what transforms a stamped image into art.
And honestly? The crafting world becomes more beautiful when more people can see themselves reflected in the art we create.

Final Thoughts
Never be afraid to experiment with color placement and texture techniques. Sometimes the smallest artistic choices — a deeper shadow, a braided line, a curl detail, or a different marker stroke — can completely transform a stamped image into something powerful, personal, and unique.
Creativity is the heart of stamping. And every artist brings something different to the table.
Fun downloadable to pair with items in your SCRAPPY BOY stash…or any circle dies, cutters or cut your own out of construction paper. Great activity for kids, grandchildren and everyone in between!
Happy Monday, crafty friends! 🎉✨ Today, I’m excited to share a delightful project using the Scrappy Boy YARN MINI ALBUM / CARD DIE. With just a few simple steps, you can create an adorable snowman that’s perfect for the winter season! Plus, I’ll showcase two additional projects featuring Scrappy Boy stamp sets to highlight the versatility of this die. Let’s get started!
Tip: Make sure to print on cardstock for better durability!
Step 2: Cut Your Pieces
Using the YARN MINI ALBUM / CARD DIE, cut out the snowman pieces from white cardstock:
Base: This will be the mat underneath the head of your snowman.
I cut my top layer out of white glitter cardstock for extra interest.
Accessories: Cut out scarf and “coal” from colored cardstock or white (easy) and color up with Black Markers.
If you own the TRAILER MINI ALBUM / CARD DIE, you can also create wheels by cutting circles from black cardstock instead of the printed coal circles!
I cut in white card and colored up with my COPIC 100.
Step 3: Color Your Accessories
Bring your snowman to life by coloring the accessories. Use markers, colored pencils, or your favorite coloring medium to add personality to your snowman!
Step 4: Assemble Your Snowman. I used the TAPE RUNNER MINI to put my snowman together. You can get 10% OFF your purchase at http://taperunner.com using PROMO CODE: KELLY10
Now it’s time to put it all together!
Start with the base: Attach the snowman’s head (the smaller winky circle) die to the base (the larger circle).
Add accessories: Glue scarf and buttons (Scrappy Boy Shirt Mini Album Card Die), circles (tires and hubcaps from the TRAILER MINI ALBUM AND CARD DIE) or a circle punch from your stash. If you like to fussy-cut, the circles are on the printable page.
Final touches: Add white gel pen accents to eyes, carrot nose and mouth.
Additional Projects to Inspire You
Yarn Ball Card Using the same die, I created a cheerful yarn ball card perfect for any crafting enthusiast. Just cut and decorate with bright, fun colors—it’s a great way to brighten someone’s day! Stamp set is the CUTE GIRLS CAT LOVERS: https://scrappyboy.com/products/cute-girls-cat-lovers-6×8-stamp-set
Volleyball Encouragement Card I transformed the YARN MINI ALBUM / CARD DIE into a volleyball for a fun volleyball-themed card! Just ink blend over with a gray or extremely light handed-blending with black and use the embossed die-cut piece,. The ink reveals and accentuates the texture.

🇺🇸 Spirit of 1776 Celebrate the 4th of July with this festive set! It’s vibrant and full of fun elements that really bring out the spirit of independence. The coordinating patterned paper pulls everything together!
I’m excited to share this A2-sized card project that’s perfect for baseball fans and can be customized for any occasion! Using the fantastic “Adult Sippy Cup” die and the “Let’s Play Ball” 6×6 paper pack from Pajama Crafters Stamps, I was able to whip up a fun and engaging card that truly showcases the versatility of these products.
One of the best aspects of the “Let’s Play Ball” paper pack is its thoughtful design. It features a delightful mix of baseball-themed patterns along with solid reds and blues, as well as stripes on the back. This adds an extra layer of versatility that makes the pack ideal for not only Father’s Day cards but also for upcoming patriotic holidays and a variety of other occasions. The combination of patterns allows for endless creative possibilities!
For this card, I played around with different colors and patterns from the pack to create a unique look. It’s not just a Father’s Day card; it can also serve as a simple “thinking of you” note or a celebration of any baseball-loving person in your life. The “Adult Sippy Cup” die is not only fun but also an essential addition to your crafting stash, allowing you to create custom cards with whatever paper designs you already have on hand.
I invite you to explore how many different papers from the “Let’s Play Ball” pack you can spot in my card! Want to get creative? Don’t hesitate to use your own patterns and colors to make a card that’s uniquely yours.
As we celebrate Memorial Day, I’m excited to showcase two unique card projects that highlight the versatility of the Mad Hatter card die set from Scrappy Boy Stamps. While this die was originally designed for whimsical, themed projects inspired by the tale of the “Mad Hatter”, I decided to take a different approach and customize it for today’s patriotic holiday.
Project 1: Patriotic Themed Card
A mash up between Scrappy Boy & Pajama Crafter Stamps
For my first project, I focused on a vibrant red, white, and blue palette to create a heartfelt card honoring our fallen heroes. By changing up the colors and incorporating relevant embellishments, I transformed the Mad Hatter die into something truly special for this occasion. The combination of thoughtful design and color allowed me to create a meaningful tribute that resonates with the spirit of Memorial Day.
Project 2: Celebrating Birthdays with Pinup Girls
Scrappy Boy Old meets New Release
In contrast, my second project features the same Mad Hatter die set, but this time paired with the brand-new Pinup Girls Birthday set that was released earlier this week. By simply adjusting the colors and the sentiment, I was able to create a fun and festive birthday card! This demonstrates just how adaptable these products can be, allowing for endless creative possibilities.
The beauty of crafting lies in the ability to innovate and personalize your projects. With a little imagination, you can repurpose any die set to fit a specific occasion or theme, proving that your creativity is your only limitation.
I hope my projects inspire you to think outside the box and explore new ways to utilize your crafting supplies!
Happy crafting, and enjoy the rest of your Memorial Day!

Happy crafting, and may your creativity continue to soar!
I created this card using images from the Bumblebee and Roses set from Annie’s Garden.
I stamped the flowers onto a A2 size card panel using Memento Black Ink on card stock that is alcohol ink friendly. I used 110 lb Hammermill paper.
Stamp your image in different angles on card panel to cover.
I started coloring the leaves using my COPIC markers. Y04, YG07 and G09 were used to color the leaves.
Sometimes if you are coloring something quickly, I do assembly line coloring, to speed like colored objects.
I don’t always go ahead, as I like the ink to be wet when coloring so that the colors blend automatically, the work is done for you when you apply the ink layers while the ink underneath is still wet, or at least damp.
To color the RED roses, I used the following blend: BV23 (shadow/under paint), R22, R24, R29, and R39.
Add shadows down first with BV23After coloring all the flowers, I decided I wanted to create a wooden background. I divided the panel using a ruler and doodled with a Micron permanent black ink and filled in with Copic markers to complete the background.Continue down the panel until wood pattern is complete
COPIC Blends are as follows:
Blue Roses – B01, FBG2, FB2, B12 and B18
White Roses – C1, Y000 and RV000
Bumblebee – Y000, YR23, YR27, FY1 and BG11
Wood – E57, E53, E51, E50 (shadow BV31 & E13)
Once the Copic coloring was complete, I used Prismacolor pencils and Gamsol to add extra depth to the shadows. Thank you for your support. Please like and follow! Happy Crafting!❤️
